Hunting and Fishing

I have done a lot of fishing this past year, but now it is time to make the switch to hunting, sorta. We are leaving on Monday for a three-day elk hunt near Prineville. This is a rifle hunt for cow elk, primarily a grandkid hunt. My 11-year-old grandson from Oahu has a tag, and my grandson Isaac, who just got married a couple of weeks ago. He is getting his wife trained for him to be gone hunting right off the bat- good boy. We will be camping right next to a lake with big trout, and I am bringing my rubber pontoon boat. On the following Friday, I leave for the Steens Mountains, where I will be archery hunting for deer. We will be camping next to Fish Lake, which has really big trout, and I am bringing my rubber pontoon boat. Who knows, I might even get in some hunting. Then, in November, I will be hunting elk with my muzzleloader in the Cascades. I have hunted since I was 12 years old. I have killed black-tailed deer, white-tailed deer, mule deer, axis deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Roosevelt elk, a bear, a mountain lion, ducks, geese, pheasants, quails, doves, and millions of squirrels. Now I am mostly into hunting for the camping and hanging out with family and friends. And, of course, fishing. The Steens Mountains are the most beautiful place on Earth, full of canyons and gorges, and they require a hunter to be in really good shape, but I bought a quad, so I am going to hunt like an old man! God has blessed my life in so many ways, and one of them is having been raised to hunt and fish. At this point in my life, I recognize that it really isn’t the hunting and fishing that was the blessing; it is being outside in God’s creation, seeing His “invisible attributes, His eternal power, and His divine nature.” Seeing God in His creation is a great way to help stay close to Him.
