With the Paris shootings and now with what happened in San Bernardino I was reminded of a Bible passage in the book of Revelations, 6:4; “A red horse went out; and to him who sat on it, it was granted to take peace from the earth, and that men would slay one another”. A lot of people don’t believe the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God like I do so this passage and others like it have been ridiculed. There will come a day when everyone will know that the Bible is true. The Bible has the answers for eternal life with God and Jesus Christ. The Bible also has the principles for living from God that results in joy, and peace, and strength and success in relationships and victory. Most of these principles are also laughed at and declared irrelevant for our day. As the world becomes more and more anxious because of things becoming increasingly out of control, perhaps many will turn to Jesus and the answers and hope He gives in the Bible. That is my prayer.
The scenes that unfolded yesterday were very frightening because they were all too familiar. Both Peggy and I lived in the Redlands vicinity and for over 20 years before moving to Corvallis. We taught at schools in San Bernardino, not far from the building where the shootings took place. Many of our friends who we taught with for all those years texted us that their schools were in a “lock-down” for most of the day. I had played golf at the golf course across the street from the building dozens of times. My brother was project manager for the construction company that built the building where the shootings took place. Our two daughters, our son-in- law, and granddaughter live in Redlands, only a short distance from the house where all the bombs and weapons were found. Derek, our son, worked at the Costco only a short distance from where the suspects were shot and killed by police. Our former pastor was among those called upon to be at the prayer and candle-light vigil on Thursday night. Be in prayer for all those families who lost loved ones in this massacre and all those who were wounded. Also, pray for those brave police officers who responded to this horrible act and who are still working to keep the Inland communities safe from any further attacks. My daughter, who watched the prayer vigil on television said that nearly every speaker, including public officials asked for people to pray and ask for God’s help and comfort at this time. Perhaps this could lead to a revival, as people see that violence like this can only be stopped by the hand of Almighty God.
